Begin with a choice

When Mary leaves the black-and-white room and sees red for the first time, does she learn something new?

The scenario

Mary is a brilliant scientist who has spent her life in a black-and-white environment. Through books, screens, and instruments without color, she learns all the physical information about color, vision, the brain, behavior, and the use of color words.

Mary then leaves the room and sees a red object. The question is whether she learns something she did not know before, such as what seeing red is like.

The knowledge argument

The argument begins with the claim that Mary knew all physical facts before leaving the room. If she learns a new fact upon seeing red, then at least one fact about conscious experience was not among the physical facts she knew.

That conclusion would challenge physicalism, understood here as the view that all facts are physical facts or fully determined by them. The force of the argument depends on what Mary knew and what kind of learning occurs.

Major replies

The ability reply says Mary gains new capacities, such as recognizing, imagining, or remembering red, without learning a new proposition. The acquaintance reply says she becomes directly acquainted with an experience she previously knew only through description.

Phenomenal-concept replies hold that Mary learns or thinks about the same physical fact through a new concept or mode of presentation. Other critics question whether complete physical knowledge could be specified independently of experiential abilities.

What the case leaves unresolved

The thought experiment does not by itself show that conscious properties are nonphysical substances or that science cannot explain experience. It targets a relation between complete physical knowledge and first-person experience.

The premise is deliberately idealized. Disagreement remains about whether Mary could possess every physical fact without the relevant concepts, whether knowing what an experience is like is factual knowledge, and what follows from the gap between description and encounter.

  • Ask whether a new way of representing a fact counts as a new fact.
